Macromedia Flash used to be the program everyone used to add animation to their website. You could put some pretty neat things up for your viewers to see, but that was not the end of the story. The current trend is for web designers to avoid Flash except for some very special situations. Why should you try to avoid using Flash on your website? Believe it or not, your site is much better off without Flash and the following article will explain why.
One reason that Flash is not necessarily the best choice is because of the cost. When developing a web site, you have to set a budget and you have to decide if spending the money on something will give you a return. Sadly, the cost of Flash does not give you the return you might expect. The expense of Flash is just one reason why you should stay away from it.
Another reason to avoid Flash is because it make the page loading time go up, and in some instances the time to load drastically increases. Today, people are all about speed. If the web page they are visiting does not load fairly fast, they will find one that will. While many people have fast connections that allow for quick loading, many people do not and you want to cater your site to as many people as possible.
While Flash animations may be fun or catchy or both, they are simply eye candy. While candy is enticing, it is not always necessary. Instead of wasting space with animations, fill the space with something that has meaning and content and will be helpful to the viewer.
Flash is not searchable. If you have content on your Flash animation, the web crawlers will not pick up on it. While you may not think it is important, it is actually quite important if you want people to be able to find your site. When someone wants to find a site similar to yours, they search for keywords in their favorite search engine. If you do not have these keywords strategically placed on your site, the web crawlers will go right by your site and pull up another one for the searcher.
And if those reasons are not enough, Flash should be avoided because in order to use it visitors must download software. Many people are wary of downloading things from the Internet to their computers for many different reasons. You may have someone who is highly interested in your site, but refuses to visit again since they have to download something in order to see everything on it.
If you are trying to build a successful site that is more than animations and graphics, it is best to avoid Flash. While visitors may like the graphic the first time or two they see it, it will eventually wear out its welcome and become annoying. Visitors will appreciate more the time you took to develop a site that is user-friendly and helpful.
