  • Update on my search for a reliable unmanaged dedicated server.

After a lot of research finally found a dedicated server company that looks trustworthy, so after a friendly live chat I rented the following unmanaged server from them-

    2.4 P4 533MHz FSB
    160 GB SATA HD
    2GB RAM
    Bandwidth: 1000GB w/10Mbps port
    6 IP Addresses
    Operating System: CentOS

Fedora, FreeBSD or Debian was also an option for free. And Windows Web 2003, Windows Standard 2003 or Windows 2000 was available for an extra monthly fee.

Control Panel: Webmin (basic control panel)

Could have had cPanel, Direct Admin, Hosting Controller, Helm or Hsphere for an additional monthly cost. Since the server will only hold our sites I only needed a basic control panel so went with Webmin.

All for $95 a month with no setup fee ($99 setup fee was waived). This server is much better than the one I’m currently renting from Server4you. The only thing I’m loosing is Plesk and that was costing me $20 a month extra anyway and was really overkill for what I need in a servers control panel.

Not going to post the name of the server company until I’ve added all the domains to the server (not looking forward to that task!!) and had the server running for a while. Don’t want to recommend a dedicated server company until I’m sure they are good.

Good riddance to Server4you who have really gone down hill.

Wish me luck on a smooth transfer :-(

  • Now I’m having problems with eNom who do domain registrations. Basically Registerfly screwed up it’s customer services and 30+ of my domains got transferred to eNom. Now they are sending me through hoops to gain access to MY own domains that I’ve spent thousands of US$s on!

  • So now can you say the name of the “dedicated server company that looks trustworthy” ?

  • I’m so good at SEO it hurts :-)

Check these SERPs out in google-

    Server4you Dedicated Server -- 2nd
    Server4you Server -- 1st
    Server4you -- 7th

    Hivelocity Dedicated Server -- 2nd
    Hivelocity Server -- 2nd
Hivelocity Server -- not in top 10 yet

    Not bad hey.

  • My 2 cents on dedicated servers..
Never had a problem with dedicated servers at Hosted DB they have simple rates.. 1 rate for both managed and unmanaged. basically, if you want help, or need something setup or installed, then it is free for any of their customers.

  • Have also been discussing my Hivelocity dedicated server problems at the WebHost Talk forum here http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=671801

3 page thread so far with Hivelocity support trying to make their case. Apparently all my fault as it’s an unmanaged dedicated server (sound familiar).

I planned to create a new article reviewing Hivelocity support, but this page is doing quite well for relevant SERPs so will probably just add new information here.

At this time this site is still on the Hivelocity server, so if it goes down you know why, their server is currently unstable due to bodging the server software to work after reloading the wrong OS version.

  • Few days ago paid the first month for a dedicated server from 123-reg (UK dedicated server company). Unlike my last 2 servers this one is managed as long as you don’t take root access.

Apparently I can change everything I need to change (only websites on the server) through chroot so will be nice to get away from the headaches of server management and support staff whose favourite phrase is-

“it’s unmanaged, so your on your own”

Will update the post above with how I find 123-reg dedicated server when I’ve had time to get everything sorted.

  • So 123-reg dedicated server was a bust!

Will update what they do regarding the refund. If they don’t give a full refund I’ll do a chargeback on my credit card as they have no supplied the services I paid for.

I’ve threatend many companies with a credit card chargback, so far never used it, so this might be a first.

  • What can I say, I’m an SEO God :-)

    Practically overnight 123-Reg Google SERPs-

    123-Reg Dedicated Server 1st
    123-Reg Server 1st

Not bad for editing an existing article.

    Also doing well for these-

    reg-123 14th
    reg-123 hosting 4th
    reg-123 domain registration 9th

Which my dedicated server page barely mentions.

Still waiting for a response regarding a refund from 123-Reg. At least I’ll get some traffic from the time wasted on them!

  • Have purchased another dedicated server. This time from Esecuredata.com for just $79 a month!

Like before not going to recommend Esecuredata dedicated server before trying it out a few months to see how it goes, but have read a lot of positive stuff about Esecuredata dedicated servers.

Also read some of their staff apparently signed up on popular web hosting forums and pretended to be customers recommending their servers! Fortunately for them their infrastructure is sound (very impressive) so they aren’t some fly by night dedicated server company that will disappear next month.

Generation 5 Junior Esecuredata Dedicated Server Specs

    Intel DUAL CORE E2140
    2GB Ram
    500 GB SATA HD
    $0.75/GB for extra bandwidth
2 (plus one per domain, $2/month for each IP beyond the first 2)
    Unlimited reboots

Whatever comes with the OS you specify is included. Most Linux distributions come with PHP 4, Perl, CGI, SSI, Apache, MySQL, Sendmail, FTP and others. Windows comes with IIS and ASP.NET. Any software beyond whatever is installed during initial setup must be installed by the client.

    I’ve gone with CentOS 5

They also have the server below for $149 a month, but I figured if I run into problems with the server above (say 2GB ram doesn’t cut it I can either upgrade to the one below or purchase a second server for another $79).

Generation 5 Esecuredata Dedicated Server Specs

    Intel CORE2DUO E6600 4M
    4GB Ram
    2x500 GB SATA HD
    $0.75/GB for extra bandwidth
2 (plus one per domain, $2/month for each IP beyond the first 2)
    Unlimited reboots

Esecuredata servers don’t come with a control panel (so researching control panels, see if there’s a good open source one) and has zero technical support (beyond hardware problems) so got someone on standby to help out if anything goes wrong with the server software**

**Have come to the conclusion that the unmanaged dedicated server companies that offer some server support do so by charging extra for their dedicated servers. Esecuredata’s server is cheaper ($79 a month!!) than any others I’ve looked at and is by far better specced, better data center etc… Since I’ve received poor quality support in the past from Server4you, Hivelocity it makes sense to have zero server support from Esecuredata and arrange for someone to help out if needed than hope over worked support staff who don’t give a rats ass if my sites are offline or not are going to spend more than 5 minutes trying to help keep a server running correctly (previous experience tells me their first line of defence is a reboot which is not the way to solve problems!).

Wish me luck with Esecuredata and I’ll post my findings in time.

Hivelocity, Reg-123 (Managed) and Server4you Dedicated Server Hosting Problems

  • One month in and the Esecuredata dedicated server hasn’t needed a reboot so far and is working as it should. Finally all my sites are online 24/7 :-)

One site in particular was struggling badly on the Hivelocity server (35,000 recipes in a WordPress blog database). On the Esecuredata server (which now holds all the sites that was on the old server and a few more) is handling the strain, site loads a little slow, but think that’s to be expected as WordPress isn’t designed to hold 35,000 posts!

Control panel wise went with Webmin/Virtualmin which I like. Very easy to use when you know how.

Still too soon to recommend them, but my AdSense income has increased about 20% which can’t be a coincidence :-)

    Concerns.

No server support, so if you screw up your on your own.

Reboots made through email with a time frame of 30-60 mins which is slow (not needed one yet though). Apparently management is planning to add remote reboots so look forward to that feature as it’s very important.

Have to say I really need to stop assuming dedicated sever companies will offer the most basic features as standard!

  • The Esecuredata server really seems cheap. How is the internet connection to the server? Do you have a good bandwith to it?

  • If your going to run unmanaged server be prepared to pay out the wazoo for support.

I use Dedicated managed servers, saves me the pain of having to try and fix any server issues. Support is 100% worth every penny you pay, never again will I run unmanaged servers.

  • Hi Dave,

Months ago I was researching Reg 1-2-3. So I sent them a simple email asking them about their service. It was only a simple question as I couldn’t find their pricing and it was just as difficult trying to find their contact us details.

You know what; seeming as that was a bog standard question, it took them weeks to reply. During that time I found your posts so I’m glad I gave them a wide birth.

So Dave, I’ve been following your posts for sometime now and wondered if you still recommend Esecuredata and who is your choice for managing your server.

    All the best
    Denise

Hivelocity, Reg-123 (Managed) and Server4you Dedicated Server Hosting Problems

  • Well since I got the server from Esecuredata had it go down once, emailed support and they said it was something about a switch and they got it working within the hour.

Relative to the other server companies I’ve used, by now I’d have been on multiple support problems, so much better.

I’d like to have remote reboots just in case, but so far only needed it once. I asked about it and support said it was on the list of things to add, but no date and since I’ve not had problems, not asked again.

With regards managing the server, got someone I know helping me out, though I’ve not needed much help. We installed Virtualmin/Webmin as the control panel and if you know what your doing with it, it’s easy to keep the server up to date.

All I have to do is type

    yum update

At the command prompt and most software updates.

Ran into an issue the other day, it was 6 of 1 half a dozen of the other sort of problem between how Virtualmin works and how it was installed (meant to install Virtualmin first, we installed Webmin first) and this caused a problem with Virtualmin automatically updating.

Lots of people are reporting the same problem, but we found a fix and Virtualmin are looking into fixing the update issue.

Anyway, so can’t recommend anyone for managing the server as it’s a friend who doesn’t do it as a service (just knows more than I do :))

  • I have been with Hivelocity for 6 years and i’m disgusted with their service. Ive called in the middle of the night with an emergency all to receive no answer. No use complaining to management, they’re even worse. No responses, just excuses.

Paying your monthly fees are even a chore, their payment system is often down. Tech support’s answers are correct about half the time. I have been the one to inform them of server issues before they were even aware of it.

    I cannot wait to leave.

Hivelocity, Reg-123 (Managed) and Server4you Dedicated Server Hosting Problems

  • With Hivelocity you dont get what you pay for

I’ve been with Hivelocity for nearly a year now, i was paying for a premium managed service for that time, when we activated the package we thought that was all that was needed…we was not told they needed any further information from us, then we found they had not carried out any of the advertised services. We needed support and was told “oh you dont have any managed package” but it was clear to see in our account that we did. We asked for a refund and they would only give us 1 months “credit” to our Hivelocity account. Management just rip you off all they care about is receiving payments, but refuse to acknowledge issues that arise whilst in contract. The after hours support is outsourced to either India or somewhere like that although they wont admit that, its easy to work out as the language barriers after hours is atrocious!

Sadly i’m still with Hivelocity as I cant find a company that doesn’t have all these same sort of problems, and it would be a mission to try and move our websites, but the moment i do find a better company… were off!

Advice? Avoid Hivelocity at all costs!
