This is going to be a bit of a moan about Direct Line Car Insurance rates to be honest, though I’ll try to make it a Direct Line Insurance Review as well.
I’m not a big car user, since I have a home office I tend to work from home most days, so a week can pass between using my car. I sometimes use it so little that the battery goes flat, so a car isn’t exactly important to my life style (would rather walk), that said I couldn’t live without one so car insurance is a necessary evil :-)
Car Insurance Renewal Due
Anyway, my car insurance renewal with Direct Line Insurance was due last month, but their quote had gone up again despite moving to a safer area on the UK East coast and NEVER making an insurance claim! According to Direct Line sales staff Skegness (small holiday town) has a higher crime rate than Grimsby (large city)!
I went with Direct Line about 5-6 years ago because they are a well known UK insurance company and gave the cheapest car insurance quote. But for the last few years the rates have gone up a little when it really should be going down, the car is aging, I’m aging and I’ve never made an insurance claim.
Have at least 5 years no claims bonus!
Safer Area = Higher Car Insurance!
Last November we moved from Grimsby which I just heard on SKY News (prompting this post/rant) is a UK hot spot for car crime (we lived next to a street locally called Murder Mile!) to Skegness (bought a house we are renovating) which I think most would agree will have less car crime than a city like Grimsby (both properties have a drive, so no other difference) and so car insurance should be cheap here. When I informed Direct Line of the move the insurance premium was increased again, not by much, but it adds up over time!
So with the renewal due it was time to review my options and do a little car insurance comparison shopping.
A neighbour told me his car insurance (from Halifax Car Insurance) was under £150 a year and his car is more powerful, Direct Line’s renewal insurance quote was over £200 a year, so gave the recommended insurance company a call and saved myself over £70 a year!
Now paying £135 a year for car insurance, so much happier. Check them out for yourself at Halifax Car Insurance.
Next I have to find a new insurance company to insure my Transit Van before the end of July (the company insuring the car doesn’t insure vans). So if anyone knows a cheap UK van insurance company please post it’s name in the comments below.

Work from home, my car gets driven infrequently, but I still have to pay the full rate.
A while back (about 9 years) a car insurance company in the US did a test market of charging based on miles driven per year.
It didn’t pan out apparently, but it would sure be nice if they brought it back!

Insurers now offer better prices to new customers than they do for existing customers at renewal. Crazy but why would they do that?
The market for new customers is so hot, the only way to get any is to slash the price. Insurers then hope to make it back at renewal. Thats why many people complain insurers treat new customers better than existing ones and it’s true.
Insurers are prepared to loose money just to get new customers so even those companies that offer good renewal prices will loose customers to the price slashers and as a business that is loosing customers will eventually go under, thay all join in.
We then see this daft situation where insurers and many other businesses like banks and building societies offer better rates to new customers at the expense of existing cutomers.
I guess this means you should change your insurer every year although it’s worth finding a company or broker who is reasonably priced and treats you well. If we valued service more than the absolute cheapest price then companies would have to give better customer service in all areas.

I love the Direct Line TV comercials, they’re better than a lot of the programs on TV but their claim that over 50% of their customers pay less than £350 for car insurance is laughable, especially since if you are not a 100% safe bet with zero risk, Direct Line won’t even quote you. I had 3 points on my licence and was refused a quote. Maybe that’s how they can make such outlandish claims.

I’m on a bashtag mission with direct line since they p’eed me off yesterday. Filled in an online quote for car ins and got a good price.
Hubbie suggested he call them cause they’ve had his business insurance for the last 5 years as well as several home insurances, thought as a truly loyal customer he may get some discount, which he did.
They wanted an initial payment of £365 which I didn’t have on one card so I accepted the quote and took Reference to call back with after switching some money around.sorted the funds and called back 20 mins later and they upped the premium from £1800 to £3100 cause even though I filled in the title, mr and gender, male they had thought my named driver was female.
When she said its for you and your daughter I said no myself and my son the price changed due to ‘human error’. THEIR mistake yet they wouldn’t back down and had no supervisor or manager available.
After arguing for sometime I hung up, redialed and got a supervisor who wouldn’t do anything either. Have told him I’m menioning them on all social networking sites and contacting ombudsman. Smarmy little shit said ‘ if I sold it to you at that price you would be committing fraud.
I accused him of being sexist as the female quote was significantly cheaper he had nothing more to say other than insurance quotes discussed over the phone aren’t verbal contracts and are not legally binding.
I have now gone with co-operative car insurance.

That was the response I got from a member of their CServe after receiving an on-line quote of nearly £1700 for a Honda Civic CTDi 2.2 from Direct Line car insurance. My previous policy was just short of £600 with AXA and had my renewal had gone up to £750.
I’m 42 and have been driving for over 20 years with no convictions or claims in at least 10 years. So I mentioned about a young lad at my place of work who had previously paid £5000 for his 1st years insurance and in that time had to make a claim and lost his NCB.
His insurance was halved for the following year. The jumped up so and so said ‘that’s the way it goes’ then hung up before I could say anything else.
No wonder they’re not on comparison sites because they would be at the bottom!!
