I do try a lot of money making opportunities, especially affiliate programs and the majority do not pan out long term, I’m not dumb with what I’ll try, for example I don’t expect to make lots of money from a money making opportunity that doesn’t require a fair amount of effort (although the money I made from Amazon, see later wasn’t hard work to be honest, but then it didn’t last long term).

I also know from experience that even when you hit on a winner the revenue tends to be relatively small: basically nice to have the money, but not enough to live off on it’s own. You pretty much have to promote multiple affiliate programs, some will work, some won’t.

One money making opportunity I’m doing OK with is ClickBank affiliate products. I do OK with Clickbank not because I get hundreds of Clickbank sales, but because the affiliate revenue share is very, very fair (most are 50% and some are as high as 75%). This means you can do OK on a handful of sales a day, which means you don’t have to promote thousands of affiliate products.

Clickbank vs Other Affiliate Programs

To compare this with other affiliate programs I’ve tried, up to September 18th 2008 I’ve sold 21,909 Amazon products over the last few years worth $411,859.18 (also sold 4 gift certificates in this time worth $305.00, apparently these aren’t popular :)).

You’d think brilliant, he’s closing on half a million dollars worth or products sold in 3-4 years, he must be loaded. Unfortunately Amazon’s affiliate scheme pays below 10% (can be as low as 4%) and so I only got a fraction of this affiliate revenue.

From the $412,164.18 I got $33,062.26 which is a little over 8% (more you sell higher the % up to about 10%).

Still, $33K is nice money for products I didn’t have to ship etc…, though it did involve creating about 20 Amazon affiliate stores from their XML datafeed and pulling in around 20,000 unique visitors a day to make this money. Note: This no longer works, (Google hates this type of thin affiliate site, no unique content and so I no longer get this amount of traffic/sales, $80 in revenue this month so far approx. $4 a day) but when it did I had no problem generating this sort of traffic from organic search (I’m an SEO consultant) meaning the traffic was free.

So to make $33K from Amazon I must have generated millions of visitors.

If I’d have been able to do similar with Clickbank products with an average 50% revenue share I’d have made over $200,000!! Now that’s a nice chunk of change (pay my mortgage of).

So you can see making money from ClickBank is far easier than making money from your average affiliate program visitor vs visitor.

I’ve been using Clickbank for about a year, but only put serious effort into it the last 6 months. It’s hard to find good quality Clickbank products and I like to try them before I’ll seriously promote them (I don’t make up bull shit about a product I’ve not used just to make sales) and so I’m only promoting a handful of Clickbank products that I’ve tried and think are worth recommending (taken sales from about 6 products).

As you can imagine takes quite a bit of time to find, buy, test and then only review the good ones (6 out of over 20). I was wanting to promote a Forex Clickbank product, (planning to trade Forex soon) but turned out to be a SCAM, wrote about it at Forex trading reviews. Unfortunately there is a lot of very poor quality Clickbank products, so to maintain your credibility you must be vigilant in your research (which means you waste a lot of time/money finding good products).

This month has been my best month to date, check the screenshot to the right it shows my Clickbank revenue for September : over $1,100 so far (still 10 days to go).

Taking the whole month this is from the sale of 5 different products. On the 19th when I made over $100 I had just 7 sales and on the 21st when I made over $200 I had 13 sales.

$100 a day isn’t a massive amount of money, but this is scalable, you’ll note my sales increased from just under $100 a week end of August/beginning of September to over $200 a week and climbing last 3 weeks because I added a new product.

Like I said I started to seriously look into this 6 months ago and ALL my traffic is organic search which takes time to develop. These sales are from around 200-300 visitors a day (all my sites pull in over 15,000 visitors, so this is a tiny fraction of my total traffic). If I can add one good product a month I could see me making $500 a week from Clickbank within a year of starting this project and the best thing about Clickbank is it’s ALL profit :)

Commission Blueprint is a course about how to make money using Clickbank and AdWords. Unlike what I do (I rely solely on organic search engine traffic) the author of the Commission Blueprint course uses AdWords to generate traffic to the Clickbank products he promotes.

The benefit of this over what I do is you don’t need any SEO skills (you could potentially use the course without owning a website) and as long as you make more money from sales than the cost of your AdWords fees you make a profit.

Many Internet marketers try to make money online selling affiliate products using AdWords and MANY go bust because they spend more on AdWords than they make from their affiliate sales. Imagine someone trying to use AdWords to promote the Amazon affiliate program with their measly 4-10% affiliate fees, your going to loose money, period! So the biggest problem with AdWords as the traffic source for affiliate products is the affiliate %, (usually it’s quite low) but with the fair 50% Clickbank share you could make money with AdWords traffic (as long as you find the right products to promote).

I’ve looked through the Commission Blueprint course and comparing what I know about Clickbank sales (50%+ affiliate fees) with organic search engine traffic I can see this being a good way to earn money through Clickbank and AdWords traffic.

I’ve used AdWords in the past (about 10 years ago now!) before I knew anything about SEO, but I didn’t really put much research into how to use AdWords effectively, so I don’t know a great deal about using AdWords today (I’m sure it’s changed over the last 10 years).

I’ve not decided if I’ll give the traffic creation method (AdWords) a go, since with my SEO skills it feel like a waste of my time/money. I’m going to have to learn how to use AdWords effectively and in that time I could create quite a bit of SEO’d content. I’ve not made a decision yet.

For someone who lacks SEO skills I could see the Commission Blueprint advice as a good way to get into affiliate marketing without the need for creating a large network of sites to power their SEO plans (I own over 100 domains, which powers what I do online SEO and affiliate wise).
